Public Notice of Class Actions

and Eligibility

Following the 7 Day Ultimatum given in these reports, we announce that we are investigating and pursuing Class Actions on behalf of individuals harmed in specific church‑related and faith‑based contexts, including sexual abuse, financial abuse and exploitation linked to “prosperity” or “health and wealth” teachings, and safeguarding failures within religious settings.

These proceedings aim to obtain accountability, compensation, and safeguarding change for those affected.

1. Church Sexual Abuse Class Action

We are bringing claims on behalf of adults and children who suffered sexual abuse in a church or religious context, including abuse by clergy, church workers, volunteers or others acting under the authority or supervision of a church or religious organisation.

Depending on the circumstances, claims may arise under:

• Civil claims for assault, battery, negligence and vicarious liability, where a church or religious body may be responsible for abuse committed by its clergy or staff in the course of their duties.

• Breach of a duty of care and failure to implement adequate safeguarding policies and procedures to protect children and vulnerable adults from foreseeable harm.

• Human rights and equality protections, including the right to be free from inhuman or degrading treatment and discrimination, where applicable.

We recognise that any sexual abuse in a church is a profound betrayal of trust and faith, and often results in long‑term psychological trauma, loss of faith or spiritual distress, relationship breakdowns, physical health consequences, difficulties in employment and education, and in some cases substance misuse or self‑harm.

2. Financial Abuse and Exploitation (“Prosperity Message”) Class Action

We are also investigating claims arising from financial abuse and exploitation associated with “prosperity” or “health and wealth” messages, particularly where individuals were encouraged or pressured to make substantial financial contributions (for example “seeds”, tithes, offerings or investments) on the basis of specific promises of material outcomes, such as a house, improved health, or guaranteed wealth, which did not materialise.

Potential legal basis include:

• Misrepresentation and misleading statements, where false or reckless assurances about guaranteed financial or health outcomes induced donations, offerings or investments.

• Undue influence, where a position of spiritual, pastoral or emotional authority was used to overbear a person’s free will so that they made gifts or financial decisions they would not otherwise have made.

• Breach of fiduciary or trust‑like duties, where church leaders or religious organisations handled funds in circumstances giving rise to obligations of loyalty, honesty and proper use of charitable or donated money.

• Consumer protection and unfair trading provisions, where faith‑based “products”, schemes or events were marketed in a way that was aggressive, deceptive or exploitative of vulnerable individuals.

We understand that such conduct can lead to loss of homes and savings, unmanageable debt, damage to credit standing, family breakdown, mental ill‑health (including anxiety, depression and shame), and a deep sense of spiritual betrayal and disillusionment.

3. Safeguarding Abuse and Policy Breaches (“UK Safeguarding Abuse”)

We are further examining claims concerning serious safeguarding failures in churches and religious organisations, including:

• Failure to adopt and implement appropriate safeguarding policies and procedures for children and vulnerable adults.

• Failure to carry out proper background checks, supervision, training and reporting in relation to clergy, staff and volunteers, contrary to recognised safeguarding standards.

• Failure to act on disclosures or concerns of abuse or risk, including not reporting matters to safeguarding officers, local authorities or the police at the earliest reasonable opportunity.

Current safeguarding standards for churches recognise a duty to protect congregations and to report suspected abuse promptly to the relevant safeguarding officer or statutory authority, and there is increasing movement towards mandatory reporting obligations in religious contexts. Where an organisation fails in these duties, civil claims may arise for negligence, breach of statutory duty (where applicable), and breach of its safeguarding obligations.

Safeguarding failures often compound the original abuse by allowing further harm to occur, silencing or discrediting victims, and causing severe emotional distress, isolation, loss of trust in institutions, and risk of continuing danger to others.

4. Who May Be Eligible

Subject to legal advice on your specific circumstances, you may be eligible to join one or more of these proposed Class Actions if:

• You suffered sexual abuse in a church or religious context, or at an activity organised, authorised or overseen by a church or religious body.

• You made significant financial contributions, offerings, investments or gifts to a church, ministry or religious leader in reliance on specific promises that you would receive a house, financial wealth, debt cancellation or particular health outcomes, which were presented as guaranteed or as a “spiritual law”, and which did not materialise.

• You were affected by serious safeguarding failures in a religious context, including where complaints were ignored, not properly investigated, or not reported to safeguarding or statutory authorities, leading to further harm or risk.

Time limits, procedural rules and available remedies vary depending on the nature of the claim, the jurisdiction, and your personal circumstances. Our lawyers will be able to provide free independent legal advice as soon as possible so that limitation periods can be assessed and necessary steps taken in time.
